depuis novembre 2000. Celle-ci ne contient que des nouvelles
valeurs d'attributs, par rapport à l'édition
actuelle 3.0.
S-57 describes the Standard to be used for the exchange of digital hydrographic data between national Hydrographic Offices and for the distribution of digital data and products to manufacturers, mariners, and other data users. The most significant digital product being delivered in the S-57 format is the Electronic Navigational Chad (ENC). S-57 was adopted as an official IHO standard by the XIVth International Hydrographic Conference, Monaco, 4-15 May 1992 and is also specified in the IMO Performance Standards for Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) (IMO Resolution A.817(l 9) as amended). |

Présentation de l'édition 3.1 de la S57 |
The contents of the Standard were also significantly re-organized for Edition 3.0 so as to comprise a main section and two appendices. The main section is formed of three parts : a general introduction to the Standard, a theoretical data model and a description of the data structure. The two appendices contain the Object Catalogue of S-57 and Product Specifications (PS) for different applications. The PS for ENC is of particular interest to ECDIS manufacturers. Associated with the ENC PS, as an Annex, is another document which provides guidelines on the Use of the Object Catalogue for ENC and is mainly intended for HOs in the ENC data creation process.
It was decided that Edition 3.0 should be frozen, i.e. remained unaltered, for four years from November 1996 onwards, in order to facilitate ENC data production by HOs and the development of ECDIS equipment by manufacturers.
Based on practical experience, some Hydrogaphic Offices identified a limited number of attribute values that they required for ENC purposes but which were not contained in Edition 3.0. It was therefore agreed that a limited new edition of S-57, Edition 3.1, would be published at the end of the four-year period, which would incorporate only these additional attribute values.
S-57Edition 3.1 has come into force in November 2000. It will remain frozen until at least November2OO2.
All components of the Standard have been frozen except
the Use of the Object Catalogue for ENC and IHO Codes for
Producing Agencies documents, subsequent editions of which
will be published as required in the course of the freeze
period. Any 'Corrections' or 'Extensions" required for future
editions, together with 'Clarifications" to the existing
text, will be recorded in the Cumulative Maintenance Document'
(available from the IHO web- site: http:\\www.iho.shom.fr.
The MD document is updated after every meeting of the TSMAD.

Edifion 3.1 is maintained by means of a cumulative Maintenance Document (MD), which is promulgated on the IHO web site (http:\\www.iho.shom.fr) after every new release. This document includes three sections, namely clarifications section, corrections section and extensions section.
The clarifications section contains improvements to the wording and minor changes to correct editorial errors that do not result in a substantive change to the Standard, (A substantive change is one that would affect an implementation of the base Standard).
Because Edition 3.1 is a minor new edition, the only information that has been transferred to it from the current Maintenance Document are new attribute values requested by users of the Standard. 'Clarifications" contained in the Maintenance Document remain of relevance to Edition 3.1, but are not included in it. "Clarifications" in the latest edition of the MD must therefore be taken into account before making use of Edition 3.1.
The corrections section contains substantive changes that amend the contents of the Standard. These changes will only become effective after they are included and published in the next major edition of the Standard.
The extensions section contains additions, and other significant changes to the Standard, which have been agreed by the appropriate IHO committee or working group and will only become effective after they have been included and published in the next major edition of the Standard.
Not all documents within the Standard are maintained through
the MD mechanism. Those documents that are either advisory
in nature or that can be updated without affecting the interpretation
of the standard, are maintained via the issue of new editions
whenever deemed necessary by the Transfer Standard Maintenance
and Application Development (TSMAD) Working Group. These
S-57 documents which are all available from the IHO web
site, are as follows:
S- 57AppendixA AnnexA - IHO Codes for Producing Agencies.
S-57AppendixB.lAnnexA - Use of the Object Catalogue for
ENC
